May 18th is the day of celebration for the International Museum Day, with the aim of promoting the key role of our museums in the social development that, in this 2017 edition, will “say the unspeakable”.
The ICOM (International Council of Museums, an organism dependent of the UNESCO), coordinates since 1977 this global celebration. On 2017, their claim is “Museums and controversial stories: saying the unspeakable”, and it was chosen with the aim of underlining the role of museums at the service of our society, “helping to heal the pain from the past thanks to mediation and its role as places that gather different points of view“. So the museums serve as spaces of coexistence and reconciliation with a past that is not always so easy to handle.
ICOM stated that in 2016 more than 35.000 museums across 145 different countries, including some Andalusian, participated on this event. A year later, the Andalusian Museums Organization, in coordination of course with some institutions based on our province, Malaga, offer a very attractive program to enjoy this celebration.
In Malaga, the International Museum Day will be specially celebrated at The Antequera Dolmens Archaeological Site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, that has prepared tour guides for this Day, with the title of ‘Controversial stories on the Dolmens Site’, and at the Museum of Malaga, the biggest Andalusian museum that we already talked you about after its opening, hosting the conferences “Putting a voice to silence” and the concert ‘Voices in the wind’.
If you are staying at one of our unique places don’t hesitate to ask us for advice. There is more information for the International Museum Day‘s program on the Consejería de Cultura’s website and also at Museos de Andalucía’s website. On the upper picture, The Antequera Dolmens Site.
